The Reconstruction of Ni and Rh (001) Surfaces upon Carbon, Nitrogen, or Oxygen Adsorption Typeset Using Revt E X 1

چکیده
Nickel and Rhodium (001) surfaces display a similar—as from STM images— clock reconstruction when half a monolayer of C/Ni, N/Ni or O/Rh is adsorbed; no reconstruction is observed instead for O/Ni. Adsorbate atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, c(2 × 2), pattern and two different reconstructions are actually compatible with the observed STM images—showing a (2 × 2)p4g pattern—according to whether a rotation of the black or white squares occurs. We report on a first-principles study of the structure of X/Ni(001) and X/Rh(001) surfaces (X=C,N,O) at half a monolayer coverage, performed using density-functional theory. Our findings are in agreement with all available experimental information and shed new light on the mechanisms responsible for the reconstructions. We show that the same substrate may display different reconstructions—or no reconstruction—upon adsorption of different atomic species, depending on the relative importance of the chemical and steric factors which determine the reconstruction. متن کاملTheory of Adsorption and Desorption of H 2 /si(001) Typeset Using Revt E X
While the small sticking coefficient for molecular hydrogen on the Si(001) surface apparently requires a large energy barrier of adsorption, no such barrier is observed in desorption experiments. We have calculated the potential-energy surface of an H 2 molecule in front of a Si(001) surface. If we relax the Si substrate, we find an optimum desorption path with a low (< ∼ 0.3 eV) ad-sorption en...
متن کاملTHE ACTIVATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE AT A MAGNESIUM (1 00) SURFACE THE ROLE OF OXYGEN TRANSIENTS
X-ray photoelectron and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopic (XPS-HREELS) studies have shown that the adsorption of carbon dioxide at Mg(100) surfaces at 80K is followed by a dissociative reaction leading to the formation of a metastable surface carbonate above 80K. The formation of a carbonate species is proposed to proceed through oxidation of C0 (g) by an active oxygen su...
متن کاملAdsorption of 4 He on a Single C 60 Typeset Using Revt E X 1
The adsorption of 4He inside and outside a single fullerene C60 is studied. A physisorption potential is proposed. The energetics and structural features of C60HeN clusters are investigated. Particular attention is paid to the growth of the highly pronounced layered density profile. The evolution towards bulk liquid and surface thickness at the free interface are discussed. متن کاملPredicting adsorption on metals: simple yet effective descriptors for surface catalysis.
We present a simple and efficient model for predicting the adsorption of molecules on metal surfaces. This heuristic model uses six descriptors for each metal (number of d-electrons, surface energy, first ionization potential and atomic radius, volume and mass) and three for each adsorptive (HOMO-LUMO energy gap, molecular volume and mass). Strikingly, despite its simplicity and low computation...
